Martin Walter Hirt was born in Chicago, Dec. 29, 1943. He slipped away peacefully Monday, April 19, 2025. He was raised in Eugene, Ore., and graduated from South Eugene High School in 1962. Marty then attended Oregon State University where he joined Sigma Nu Fraternity. He graduated in 1966.

Marty met his wife Margaret at Oregon State University in 1963. They married November 1966 and moved to Gold Beach, Ore., where their two sons, Terry and Tim, were born. He worked for U.S. Plywood. They then moved to Eugene and then Diboll, Texas. They stayed in Texas for one year and then moved back to Eugene, where he worked for Treplex. Later, the big move was to Lewiston where Marty was plant manager of two wood chip plants for Montana Fir Chip Company. He then retired.

Marty was born and raised with a fishing rod in his hand. He enjoyed fishing with his father and brother and fished wherever he lived. He was also a guide on the McKenzie River. Marty also enjoyed hunting, golf, casinos, his Shih Tzu dogs and playing cards with his friends at Clarkston Country Club. He was a character and larger than life. He will be missed forever. He also enjoyed, and was very proud of, his family.

Marty was preceded in death by his father Robert E. Hirt and his mother Gertrude Hirt. He is survived by his wife of 58 years and his sons: Terry (Paige) and Tim (Amy). Terry’s sons are Brayden, Benjamin and Bryce. Tim’s children are Anthony, Nathan, Nicholas and Hannah. His two great-grandchildren are Belle and Jack. Marty is also survived by his brother Robert Hirt (Carole), sister Ty Pierce (Jeff) and several nieces and nephew: Holly (Troy), Bob (Anette) and Christy (Steve).

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home, 920 21st Ave., Lewiston. A reception will follow at Vassar-Rawls.
