Bertha “Bert” E. McVicars, 92, of Lewiston, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 23, 2025. She was born June 12, 1933, in Ipswich, S.D., to Louis and Mary Usselman. Bert grew up on a farm outside of Ipswich. After graduation she moved to Missoula, Mont., where she met her late husband, Bill McVicars. They were married for more than 60 years. They moved to Lewiston in 1960.

Bert was a loving mother to four children; John McVicars (Julie), children Chad and Jenna; Julie Earp (Bob), son Jason; Nancy Hake (Dennis), children Ian and Emily; Susan Denny (Randy), children Elizabeth, Melissa and Amanda. She also has nine great-grandchildren with another on the way. Bert is preceded in death by her parents and four siblings. She has two living siblings, Patricia Frost, of Lewiston, and Tom Usselman, of Aberdeen, S.D.

While raising four children, Bert also worked for St. Joseph Hospital for 25 years in the data-processing department. Upon retirement, Bert stayed connected to St. Joseph Hospital through her volunteer work at the hospital gift shop for another 25 years. Bert lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to her family, faith and community. She loved spending time with her family and hosted many holiday celebrations at the family home in Lewiston. Bert was a prolific baker; her always-available and wide variety of cookies delighted her eight grandchildren. Along with her husband, Bill, she created many memories at the rustic “ranch” in Benewah County and then at the family cabin on Coeur d’Alene Lake. She enjoyed taking trips with her kids and their families. She had a passion for sewing and quilting and was an active member of the Seaport Quilters Guild for years.

Bertha and family have been longtime members of St. James/All Saints Catholic Church. Bert was an active member of her church serving as a Eucharist minister, Altar Society and helped prepare meals for events.

A rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, with a funeral Mass to celebrate Bert’s life at 11 a.m., at All Saints Catholic Church, 3330 14th St., Lewiston. A graveside service will follow at Normal Hill Cemetery in Lewiston, then a lunch will be held at the church.
